SCORCHING DAY 4 IN THE WATER AND ON THE BEACH
A SCORCHING DAY 4 IN THE WATER AND ON THE BEACH AT THE QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS09 MAY 2007 -- The action heated up both in the water and on the beach today at the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Costa de Caparica, Portgual. Sunny skies and warm offshore winds combined with more consistent swell and the top young surfers in the world let loose in the improved conditions. One of the most exciting heats of the day occurred early in the morning when Brazilian Jadson Andre clashed with Australians Chris Friend and Ellis Ericson in Round 4 of the Under 18 Boys. Teammates Friend and Ericson were looking to block Andre from catching waves so that they could advance together through the round, but the firey young Andre had other ideas. “I fought to get rid of them and eventually I got an 8.67 (out of 10), said André, who won the heat. Tahitian Tamoroa McComb is another fierce competitor who rolled to victory today. His best wave, featuring a series of huge open face turns on one of the biggest waves of the day, earned him a 9.33 (out of 10). “I watched my friends Garrett (Parkes of Australia) and Maxime (Huscenot of France) win their heats and it put pressure on me to do well.” Parkes was also in great form again today while winning his heat. “Even though it’s small, the waves are really contestable,” he said. On the girls side, Tarryn Chudleigh (South Africa) and Courtney Conlogue (USA) were standouts. Chudleigh scored first in her heat over talented Alize Arnaud (France) and Monyca Byrne-Wickey (Hawaii). Conlogue, for her part, took down last year’s girls champion Pauline Ado (France) and Alessa Cuizon (Hawaii). Both girls gave credit to support from friends and family who have been watching them online. “I’m just stoked that everyone from home is a part of what South Africa is doing here,” said Chudleigh while Conlogue gave a shout out to her little brother who was on his way to school back in California. Boys Under 18 single elimination repechage heats also ran today and Rafeal Pereyra (Venezuela) was was on fire. “Now it feel like I have to do everything possible to keep making it through the rounds and get to the final,” said Pereyra. In the team standings, defending champion Australia took the lead with France second and Hawaii third. Team USA, hoping to medal here, was sitting in a disappointing 6th place behind South Africa and Hawaii. The amazing beach weather brought thousands of spectators to the event site at Praia da Mata. Competitors continually waved their colorful national flags and broke out local dance moves at the water’s edge. Another day in the life of ISA surfers… Action continues tomorrow at 8am. LATIN AMERICAN AND POLYNESIAN SURFERS STAND OUT ON DAY 3
LATIN AMERICAN AND POLYNESIAN SURFERS STAND OUT ON DAY 3 OF QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPSSurfers from Latin America and Polynesia stood out today at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships at Costa de Caparica, Portugal. 08 MAY 2007 -- Francisco Bellorin (Caracas, Venezuela) was at his giant killing best again this morning – less than a day after upsetting the current European Junior champion, Joan Duru (Capbreton, France). Bellorin, surfing in Round 3 of the Under 18 division, took out touted surfers Charles Martin (France), who posted the highest scores of day 1, and Cory Arrambide (Ventura, USA.)
“I went to the water really focused, listening to some Venezuelan music and watching the waves,” said Bellorin. “I’m happy because I’m surfing against the best in the world and I’m beating them. My intention is to win this contest because this is my last year as a junior.” Tamaroa McComb is (Tahiti) another young surfer with tremendous confidence who has traveled a long way to get here. He dominated a stacked heat in the Under 16 division against PV Laborde (France), Shaun Joubert (South
África) and Dylan Goodale (Hawaii). McComb’s opponents all have amazing ability but today they were no match for the rampaging Tahitian. “The waves are tricky so I moved around a lot to find the best ones,” said the soft-spoken McComb in French. Garret Parkes (Byron Bay, Australia) is another Under 16 surfer to watch.
Like McComb he is featured in the highly anticipated DVD “Young Guns 3”
and he’s definitely taken the experience with him to this event. “I’ve still got the scars on my feet from G-land,” said Parkes. Parkes had an easy time again in his heat today and gave out shout out to his parents after it was over. “I’m so stoked that me mum and dad are watching me online back home, he said. On the girls side, one of the few bright spots on a tough day for team USA was the performance of Sage Erickson (Oxnard, USA). In heat dominated by Hawaii’s Monyca Byrne-Wickey, Erickson posted a dramatic come from behind second place finish over Bruna Schmitz (Brazil) in the last seconds of their Round 2 heat. “I was so far behind that I almost gave up,” said a beaming Erickson.
“Something just told me to turn it around and somehow I got the score. I saw my whole team on the beach and they were clapping. You feel so good when you make a heat here.” The first round of the Under 16 Boys Repechage ran at the second podium today. 12 year-old Martin Jeri (Lima, Peru) thrilled his supporters by performing aerials and fin free reverses in his heat. The size of the waves held steady at the 2-3 foot (.5-1 meter) and stayed clean all day. It was a warm, beautiful day in Portugal and the beach was packed with spectators enjoying the surfing, the waves, the skate ramp and an inflatable soccer field. SURF IMPROVES FOR DAY TWO OF 2007 QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIORS
AUSTRALIA’S FITZGIBBONS DOMINATES UNDER 18 GIRLS ROUND 1SURF IMPROVES FOR DAY TWO OF 2007 QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIORS07 MAY 2007 -- Seasoned competitor Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW, Australia) did not let the hassles of international travel stop her from tearing apart the waves of Costa de Caparica on day 2 of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. Fitzgibbons, silver medalist at this event in Brazil last year, endured a 42 hour trip from Australia to Portugal and arrived in Lisbon without her luggage. “I still haven’t gotten my clothes,” said Fitzgibbons. “But I had fun in my heat. I found a couple of good lefthand runners.” The surf improved markedly today from yesterday’s generally small and windy conditions. Clean 2-3 feet (.5-1 meter) waves were on offer in the morning and the breeze stayed light most of the day. Fitzgibbons surfed aggressively yet smoothly and her total heat score of (17.67 out of 20) was higher than any other competitor – male or female. Fitzgibbons teammate, Laura Enever (North Narrabean, NSW Australia), also had a great heat. “The waves were a lot better today so it was a good start to the competition for us in the girls division.” On the Aussie boys side, Teale Vanner (Kangaroo Island, SA, Australia) and Garret Parkes earned impressive wins in their respective divisions. “Our team is feeling good, but there’s still a long way to go,” said Vanner. France was also represented well again today by its surfers. Marc Lacomare (Hossegor, France) posted the highest single wave 9.0 (out of 10) and total heat score (16.67 out of 20) in Round 2 of the Under 18 Boys. “I arrived here four days before the contest and I surfed all day everyday to feel my board and understand the wave,” said Lacomare. The preparation has paid off so far and Lacomare is confident that he will lead his team to improve upon the silver medal it won in Brazil. “We have a solid team so we hope to do well here,” he said. France was dealt a setback, however, when another of its stars, current European Junior Champion, Joan Duru (Capbreton, France) was relegated to the repechage round by Manuel Selman (Vina del Mar, Chile) and Francisco Bellorin (Caracas, Venezuela.) “That was a very close heat,” said Selman. “Duru is a great surfer and I was happy to beat him. The South African team is another squad to look out for. Matthew Bromley, 15, (Capetown, South Africa) looked strong in Round 2 of the Under 16 Boys. “I’m super stoked that I won my heat and I’m and amped for the next one, said Bromley. “The waves are starting to get more consistent and there are so many good surfers here. It’s amazing to see everyone from around the world coming together to surf against each other.” The waves are forecasted to improve even more tomorrow and the contest will get underway at 8am (GMT) WATCH THIS EVENT LIVE ON YOUR COMPUTER SCREEN:

DAY 1 - FRANCE SHINES IN THE WAVES OF CAPARICA
FRANCE SHINES IN THE WAVES OF CAPARICARound 1 of the Quiksilver ISA World Juniors Begins in Clean Small Waves06 MAY 2007: 17-year old Charles? Martin of France, posted the highest single wave score of the day, (9.17 out of 10 points) and the highest heat score (16.17 out of 20) of the Under 18 Boys at the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships today in Costa de Caparica, Portugal. "Today's surfing was difficult,” said Martin. “But I? was lucky to win the last heat of the day, going out in the high tide.? I feel very confident, but I am also very much aware of the quality of? my rivals.” Martin’s teammate, Marc Lacomare, 17, also put on a show. Lacomare took to the water in the first heat of the day and looked entirely at home in the morning’s clean and small (1-2 feet, .5 meter) surf. “I had a few good scores so I’m happy,” said Lacomare. “Tomorrow the surf should be bigger and I’m stoked to pass through my first heat. I love this contest and I know this wave so I hope to do well here.” While the conditions proved challenging for all of the surfers, many competitors still managed to stand out. Australia’s Chris Salisbury, 17, (Newport Beach, NSW) convincingly won his first round heat with smooth backside surfing. Salisbury, competing in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships for the first time, said he was enjoying the international flavor and camaraderie of the event. “It’s really fun to stay with all of the other competitors from around the world and meet everyone,” said Salisbury. “The first few days have been a full on froth fest.” Tonino Benson, 17, (Kona, Hawaii) also looked strong. “The key was to catch a lot of waves and get a rhythm going,” said Benson. While the waves lacked the power of Hawaii and the water temperature was a lot colder, Benson said his squad is ready for anything. “It’s difficult out there today, but we’ve got a strong team and we’ll adapt,” he said. Brazil, the team most comfortable in this type of surf, also put in a solid effort today. Alejo Muniz, 17, current U16 silver medallist, from Florianoplis, Brazil unleashed a ferocious backhand attack in the afternoon. “I caught some good waves and I’m really happy to be here with the Brazilian team,” said Muniz. “The waves here are like they are in Brazil and I think we have a really good chance to win.” This contest is unique because the competitors surf not for prize money, but for medals and the pride of representing their countries, as members of their official National Surfing Teams. Each heat the young surfers walked down to the water’s edge, waved their nation’s flag and cheered for their compatriots. A few meters away from the ocean, the action was equally intense at the skate ramp as surfers had fun practicing their airs on land for the days ahead when the surf is expected to increase in size. The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships was broadcast live on the Internet, at www.quiksilver.com/isa and thousands of surf fans logged in from Austrália, Barbados, Jamaica, Canada, South África, Brazil, France, the United Kingdom and the USA to watch all of the action and to email in words of support for their favorite teams. 2007 WJSC Opening Ceremony
28 delegations present at the official opening of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships SURFING DOWN THE STREETS OF ALMADA, PORTUGAL05 MAY 2007 -- The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships paraded through the city of Almada, Portugal today in a grand and colourful opening ceremony. This event, famous for its spirit of international brotherhood and Olympic style competition, has set a new record this year: 261 surfers, representing 28 nations. The 28 delegations gathered early morning next to the Courthouse in Almada, near the capital city of Lisbon, and proceeded to parade in style through the streets of Almada, up to the Praça da Liberdade. Inspired by the Olympic Games, the team from host country Portugal closed the parade to the pride and satisfaction of vast numbers of spectators who cheered them on every step of the way. The culmination of today’s event was the traditional Sands of the World ceremony where the 28 participating nations poured sand from their local beaches into a single vase - symbolising the union of the peoples and the ISA’s hopes for world peace. Fernando Aguerre, the International Surfing Association (ISA) President, then officially launched the competition. In his speech, Aguerre highlighted the “importance of achieving this record participation, with 261 athletes from 31 selections, a strong sign of junior surfing’s importance”. The Mayor of Almada, Maria Emília Neto de Sousa, also spoke of the “honour of hosting such a prestigious world sports event”. Less than 12 hours remain before the first surfers paddle out at Caparica Beach and the Portuguese Team Coach José Braga, was optimistic about his squad’s chances. “The whole team feels motivated and in great shape. We have expectations of a top 10 finish”. Last year’s winner, Team Australia, is again the favourite to take the overall title, but South Africa, Hawaii, USA and Brazil are also looking strong. Small waves are forecast for the next few days with an increase predicted later in the week. The Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships will be broadcast live on the Internet, at www.quiksilver.com/isa. Martin Potter, 1989 world champion of surfing, leads the commentary team and the webcast will run each day from 8am to 4pm local time (GMT). Photos, videos and results will also be updated continuously. The physical event site, built on a wide sandy Caparica beach, is quite impressive as it features skate ramps, tents for each team, full service press area and elevated judging suites. organization: Caparica Surfing Clube Praia do CDS - Costa de Caparica

31 National teams will parade through the streets of Almada on May 5th COUNTDOWN TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS01 MAY 2007 -- The arrival of the first delegations to Portugal marks the start of the countdown to the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. 31 countries and 400 athletes are expected for the first ever outing of the competition in the Old World waves. On Saturday - May 5th - surfing will invade the streets of Almada. Costa de Caparica is about to turn into the surfing capital of the world, due to the organisation - from May 5th to May 13th - of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships. This will be the premiËre for the most important global surfing competition for youngsters in the waves of the Old World. Before they venture out on the waves of Praia da Mata, however, the 400 participating athletes will show their colours at the opening parade, scheduled for next Saturday morning. Same as in the Olympic Games, the delegations will make a symbolic walk in full ceremonial attire - the honour of closing the parade will fall to Portugal. The parade will start from the Almada Courthouse [Largo Gabriel Pedro] and will make its way through the city to PraÁa da Liberdade. After the day’s relaxation, the competition will be truly launched on Sunday [May 6th]. The presence of 31 national teams makes it possible for the Portuguese organisers to claim an absolute participation record in the competition’s history. The competing teams will represent Portugal, New Zealand, Japan, France, the United States of America, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Jamaica, Switzerland, Brazil, Chile, Canada, Barbados, South Africa, Ireland, Hawaii, Venezuela, Australia, England, Italy, Guatemala, Spain, Israel, Peru, Germany, Costa Rica, Somalia, Morocco, Ecuador, Argentina and Tahiti. The home team has great expectations, in the wake of the 9th place obtained at last year’s competition. Team selector JosÈ Braga showed some restraint in announcing a Top-8 finish as his objective. Amongst the tourists are big names such as World Champions Tonino Benson [Hawaii], Pauline Ado [France] and Sally Fitzgibbons [Australia].
A PARTY ATMOSPHERE AT PRAIA DA MATA For nine days running, in parallel to the competition, there will be a lot of reasons to go to Costa de Caparica. The Surfers Village, installed at Praia da Mata, will host surfing lessons, skateboard demonstrations, yoga classes, campaigns to raise awareness to sea-rescue techniques, diving for beginners, organised by the Navy, and a Shopping Village with Surf Shops, surfboard manufacturers/importers and traditional crafts. In the afternoons, as well as on some nights, reggae and electronic music concerts will take place. Under the auspices of the International Surfing Association and of the Portuguese Surfing Federation, Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships is an organisation of the Caparica Surfing Club and Natural Factor, sponsored by Quiksilver/Roxy and the Municipality of Almada. Co-sponsors include Plantronics, Sapo and Sagres. Further to be noted is the support given by the Tourist Board of Costa Azul [the Blue Coast is the region’s nickname], the Portuguese Navy and the Costa de Caparica municipal authorities.
